SSD drives attachment requires premium feature key – IBM Disk Systems (DS3512, DS3524)

On the Systems Storage DS3500 Storage Subsystem with 7.77.xx.xx level firmware, when certain Solid-State Drives (SSDs) are connected without a Premium Feature Key installed, an error message is displayed stating that a Premium Feature Key is required. This Premium Feature Key is not required.

The following SSDs are affected:

Feature Code: 5500, 5505
Part Number: 81Y9903,81Y9907
Size: 200GB, 400GB

Workaround

If the above noted SSDs are going to be installed on a System Storage DS3500 Storage Subsystem that is not running the 7.77.xx.xx firmware with the fix, call IBM Support. IBM will provide the requisite Premium Feature Key that will allow the drives to be successfully installed or will provide a build that will have fix in it. The fix is contained in all 7.77 builds starting with 7.77.29.00.

Additional information

This is a defect in the 7.77.xx.xx firmware. The defect will be corrected so that the firmware does not require a Premium Feature Key in order to install SSDs. Until that new firmware is released and installed, a Premium Feature Key will need to be obtained from IBM Support. The firmware fix is contained in all 7.77 builds starting with 7.77.29.00.
