At a small dinner with some friends recently, someone asked me why IT was still so disconnected from the business. My friend (she works for an international fashion company with 230 stores AND a growing on-line presence) is responsible for the on-line shop and her laptop is her most important tool. Every once in a while, the laptop acts funny and needs attention from the helpdesk. She then gets a notice around 9 o’clock to hand her laptop over and if she is lucky, she will get it back the same day. She told me she has tried to explain that a day without a laptop is impossible for her, but she described the look of the helpdesk person as “I don’t believe anybody outside IT really uses his/her laptop all day……”
