An issue with the 7.77 controller firmware is preventing the 3 TB Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) drives from being properly installed in an IBM System Storage EXP5060 Storage Enclosure attached to an IBM System Storage DS5100 or DS5300 Storage Subsystem with SubModel ID (SMID) 132 or 131, respectively. SMIDs 132 and 131 are created by installing the 480 Drive Feature Pack on the DS5100 or DS5300 storage subsystem. If the 480 Drive Feature Pack is not installed, then the SMIDs will be 93 or 94.
Even when all of the proper configuration prerequisites have been met, the 3 TB SATA drives are still being flagged as Incompatible. The drives install successfully if the SMID is 93 or 94.
This issue affects the 3 TB SATA drives with the following Product ID:
- HUA723030ALA640 81Y2460
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- IBM System Storage DS5100 Storage Controller, type 1818, any model
- IBM System Storage DS5300 Storage Controller, type 1818, any model
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- IBM System Storage EXP5060 High Density Enclosure, type 1818, any model
This tip is not software specific.
The 7.77.18.00 firmware for the 1818 is affected.
Solution
This behavior has been corrected in the 7.77.34.00 firmware release.
This release is available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support’s Fix Central web page, at the following URL:
These drives are being flagged as Incompatible because the controller firmware is not recognizing the Inquiry String that is sent by the drives. The firmware will be updated to recognize the Inquiry String properly.
Also note that the drive firmware on the drives listed in the Profile (MKAOA6X0) is different from what is listed in the Readme file (MKAOA6R0) for the ESM/Hard Disk Drive (HDD) 1.76 package. The firmware on the drives is correct and the Readme file will be corrected to correspond to that.
