Pure Storage’s coming high-end array: We have the details

We can tell you a few more juicy details about Pure’s coming high-end array, and we’re deducing that SolidFire has a product capacity refresh coming.

What we knew was that the new range-topper would boast up to 1.5PB usable capacity using 4 and 8TB 3D NAND modules (SSDs). It would have always-on QoS, support thousands of virtual machines and be priced at less than $1GB/usable capacity.

I reside at about 39 degrees north latitude in the United States, which means that it is fall here. I live in the middle of a mostly deciduous forest, so right now fall is at its peak. The only word that can be used to describe the scenery of yellows and reds is “spectacular.” I’m including a picture of a bush outside my house. I could put up a full portfolio, but since the intent of this post is technical rather than artistic, we’ll save that for another time and place.

IBM DS8870 offers exceptional performance with new processors, microcode, drive options, and advanced functions to enhance data protection

Information

New features for IBM® DS8870 offer a greater choice in price and performance, including:

  • IBM POWER7+™ processor technology
  • Flash optimization
  • Capacity scalability with 1.2 TB 10K rpm SAS and 4 TB 7.2K rpm nearline SAS encryption drives
  • Security

IBM DS8870 systems (machine types 2421, 2422, 2423, and 2424) are designed to offer better performance with new processors, microcode, drive options, and advanced functions to enhance data protection.

IBM POWER7+ processor technology

The DS8870 high-performance Model 961 features IBM POWER7+ server technology to help support higher performance. DS8870 can help deliver up to 15% performance improvement in maximum IOPS in transaction processing workload environments over the prior POWER® processor for Model 961.

Flash optimization

With the introduction of the 7.2 microcode, the system with the POWER7+ processor and all-flash drive configuration helps the DS8870 to deliver up to 20% improvement in maximum IOPS in random I/O workload environments.

Enhanced business class configuration

The entry system, IBM DS8870 business class, is now scalable to 1,056 drives and up to 16-core processors.

Scalable capacity

DS8870 offers new disk drives that help improve capacity and price-performance options for transaction processing workloads. New drives are:

  • 1.2 TB 10,000 rpm SAS encryption drive
  • 4 TB 7,200 rpm nearline SAS encryption drive

Security

In this release, IBM DS8870 supports the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) SP 800-131A, a US standard that provides guidance for protecting sensitive data by using cryptographic algorithms that have key strengths of 112 bits.

NIST SP 800-131A requires the use of cryptographic algorithms that have security strengths of 112 bits to provide data security and data integrity for secure data created in the cryptoperiod starting in 2014. This release provides enablement for NIST SP 800-131A on DS8870. Conformance with NIST SP 800-131A is dependent on use of appropriate prerequisite management software versions and appropriate configuration of the DS8870 and other network related entities. IBM remote service connections are not compliant with NIST 800-131A at this time.

  • December 6, 2013: General availability
  • March 6, 2014: Field (MES) availability date for 1.2 TB 10K rpm FDE and 4 TB 7.2K rpm nearline SAS encryption drives (feature numbers #5768, #5868, #5769, and #5869)

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 214 is designed to offer a performance boost for 4 TB drive based systems with an option for up to 12 TB flash caching to improve disk-to-cache ratio. Customers can now choose to empower their 4 TB systems with 800 GB flash caching per module (up to 12 TB per system), or with 400 GB flash caching per module (up to 6 TB per system) option, according to their business needs.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 with software version 11.4.0 is designed to enhance 4 TB drive based configurations strengthened by optional 800 GB flash drives.

XIV algorithms enhance the power of commodity flash drives to help deliver ultra-high cache performance to all system data. The new 800 GB flash caching option available for 4 TB systems supports top performance levels at a much higher density and an exceptionally low cost per TB.

Customers can optionally order 400 GB flash drives, allowing them to choose the best fit for their business objectives.

What’s the first Kinetic Ethernet hard drive?

The first direct-access-over-Ethernet Kinetic hard drive is a modified 4TB Seagate Terascale.

The Terascale is a nearline 3.5in disk spinning at 5,900RPM. It swaps the SATA or SAS interface connections for two 1Gbps SGMII Ethernet ports to directly attach to the network. The drives repurpose the standard SAS HDD connector.

IBM® System Storage® DCS3700 offers support for the new 4 TB 7,200 rpm 6 Gb SAS Nearline 3.5-inch hard disk drive that increases physical capacity by up to 33% over the previous generation drive and includes T10 Protection Information (PI) functionality.

The new 4 TB 3.5-inch drive is supported on the DCS3700 controller and expansion unit. The T10 PI functionality requires Controller Firmware (CFW) version 7.86.

The new 4 TB 3.5-inch drive is supported on the DS3512 and its expansion unit, EXP3512. The T10 PI functionality requires Controller Firmware (CFW) version 7.86.

IBM XIV Storage System software version 11.3.0 (5639-YYB) with IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility and support for 4 TB disk drives

IBM® XIV® Storage System software version 11.3.0 features IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility, which is designed to enable administrators to move volumes between XIV systems without application disruption. IBM XIV Storage System software version 11.3.0 also supports 4 TB disk drives, which can help reduce energy costs by as much as 25% per usable TB while contributing to space and energy efficiencies. Customers using the 4 TB based XIV system can benefit from up to 25% less power consumption per usable TB than the 3 TB based XIV system. They can also benefit from a reduction of up to 11% in price per usable TB over the 3 TB based system, and up to 26% in price per usable TB over the 2 TB based system. The 4 TB based XIV systems provide up to 33% increased capacity in the same footprint compared to systems equipped with 3 TB drives, while maintaining similar performance. Modules with 4 TB drives include double the RAM size over 3 TB systems, totaling 48 GB RAM per module.

An order of a validly configured IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 machine type 2810 or 2812, Model 214 must occur at the same time as an initial IBM XIV Storage System Software V11.3.0 order.

IBM Storwize Family Software for Storwize V7000 Unified delivers enhanced file storage capabilities for this advanced midrange disk system. Storwize V7000 Unified is a block and file storage system with tightly integrated management that helps simplify storage administration with a single user interface and common command-line interface (CLI). Customers can benefit from greater flexibility for provisioning of storage resources with its support of NFS, CIFS, FTP, HTTPS, and SCP file protocols, and greater overall capacity utilization with the existing block functions of the Storwize V7000. Storwize V7000 Unified provides file replication and file-level snapshots for business continuity and disaster recovery.
