There has been a perennial argument of SAS versus SATA for enterprise storage. Some people say it’s OK to use SATA for enterprise storage and some say that you need to use SAS. In this article I’m going to address two aspects of the SAS vs. SATA argument. The first is about the drives themselves, SATA drives and SAS drives. The second is about data integrity in regard to SATA channels and SAS channels (channels are the connections from the drives to the Host Bus Adapter – HBA).

Hypes up hyperconvergence as a tasty deal

Simplivity, the startup selling its hyper-converged server, storage and networking OmniCube, is expanding its global channel program with three membership tiers.

Launched in 2013 (story here), the company’s OmniCube product is called a v3.0 convergence system and Simplivity claims hundreds of customers around the globe and m0re than 1,000 systems installed.

IBM PowerHA SystemMirror for AIX*, V6.1 and V7.1 adds support for the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Software V7.1 & V7.2. This includes the High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) capabilities of IBM PowerHA SystemMirror for AIX V6.1V7.1.2 and v7.1.3 Enterprise Edition.

This support includes SVC V7.1 or V7.2 software running on the IBM Storwize family of storage controllers.

SVC V7.1/v7.2 was tested and qualified with the following AIX/PowerHA levels:.

What are the supported FICON Director and Channel Extender Configurations for the TS7700?

The table below is the matrix of FICON directors and switches supported with the TS7700.

  • Suppport is for use between the host and the TS7700
  • 1 level of cascading (2 directors) is supported
  • No intermix of vendors
  • Maximum distance supported is 100km (62 miles) for all vendors/models (3000 miles for FICON accelerators – see notes below table)
  • Switches must be set to Auto-Negotiate
  • Contact vendors to determine which products are appropriate for use with channel extenders
  • Listing in this matrix is not intended to extend any support listed in other IBM letters or publications.

Note: ‘FTA’ refers to Ficon Tape Acceleration feature.
