A recent Storage Switzerland report covered the basics of Docker and Storage; what Docker is and how it impacts storage. Container technology and Docker specifically places unique demands on the storage infrastructure that most legacy storage architectures are ill-prepared to handle. The initial concern is developing a storage infrastructure that will support a container based dev/ops environment. The second concern is that these infrastructures will have to support containers in production as the value of something more granular than a virtual machine (VM) is understood.

Easily the most astonishing result from ClusterHQ’s most recent State of Container Usage survey [PDF] was that nearly three-fourths of 229 IT professional respondents said their data centers are running containers in a hypervisor-virtualized environment — that is to say, a container environment inside the safety of a separate virtualization layer. That figure was bolstered by about 61 percent of respondents saying that security remained a barrier to their data centers’ adoption of containers in production.

Docker: What do Storage Pros need to know?

Docker was created to solve the problems that organizations face when they implement server virtualization on a wide scale; overhead and inefficiency. These challenges occur because virtualization is a sledgehammer to the problem it was designed to solve; allow multiple applications to run simultaneously on the same physical hardware in such a way that if one application fails the rest of the applications are not impacted. This is the real goal of virtualization, isolation of applications so that a misbehaving application does not impact another application or its resources.

Docker Containers Performance in VMware vSphere

“Containers without compromise” – This was one of the key messages at VMworld 2014 USA in San Francisco. It was presented in the opening keynote, and then the advantages of running Docker containers inside of virtual machines were discussed in detail in several breakout sessions. These include security/isolation guarantees and also the existing rich set of management functionalities. But some may say, “These benefits don’t come for free: what about the performance overhead of running containers in a VM?”
