One of the most interesting (among the few) announcements at VMworld was about VSAN 6.1. The product is quickly maturing and new features are being added version after version (here what’s new). And the product promises to be even better (with erasure coding and dedupe coming up in the next version!).

In one of my latest posts I wrote about private object storage not being for everyone… especially if you don’t have the size that makes it viable… But, on the other hand we are all piling up boatloads of data and users need to access it from many different locations, applications and devices at anytime.

How many times have you heard this statement? Tape is dead! Mainframe is dead! So on and so forth… it turned out not to be true, most of the times it was just a way to say that a newer technology was seeing a strong adoption, so strong as to eclipse the older one in the eyes of the masses. But, in the case of FCoE, it is slightly different.

A few weeks ago I attended SFD7. Most of the conversations we had during the event where about hyper-converge. And we had at least three meetings where hyper-convergence was at the center of the stage: Maxta, Springpath and VMware. The market is very active, to say the least, and still in a very effervescently expanding phase.

In the last few months I had several interesting briefings with storage vendors. Now, I need to stop and try to connect the dots, and think about what could come next.
It’s incredible to see how rapidly the storage landscape is evolving and becoming much smarter than in the past. This will change the way we store, use and manage data and, of course, the design of future infrastructures.

Lately I have been writing a lot about the role of flash memory and disk drives in the future of storage infrastructures (here and here a couple of examples). And latest news is simply confirming that it will be all about Flash for primary workloads and Object Storage (and disks) for the rest.

I met StorMagic a few weeks ago at Storage Field Day 6. We are talking about a company born in 2006 that is proposing a sole product called SvSAN. A VSA for VMware (and Hyper-V) environments which is very good for large distributed and remote deployments.

In the last couple of months I’ve come to realize that Object Storage is the worst thing you can recomed to an average IT organization (or even to a reseller). And yes, I know, I’ve been trying to convince all my readers and clients how cool it is in all its aspects and potential… but when come to reality it’s not true!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a strong supporter of it, but It’s usually very hard to understand and sell this technology and it needs a different, smarter, approach… just only from the marketing point of view!

Almost a year ago I wrote a piece about server-side caching, wondering if it was a mere feature or something more. After this VMworld it is pretty clear that server-side caching is quickly maturing and is a really interesting area to look at, not just for what it does today but for what we have to expect tomorrow… especially from the virtualization perspective.

In these days some Industry pundits are wondering about the future of NAS and of some primary NAS vendors (a couple of blogs are worth a read, here and here).
From my POV traditional NAS is dead (and I mean dead as per mainframes or tapes… so, don’t get me wrong about this post!).
At the same time NAS is alive and kicking, it’s literally evolving into something new and will continue to be part of all Data Centers.
