The sudden popularity over NAND Flash has spelled doom for traditional magnetic Hard Disk Drives (HDD). For years we have been hearing how HDDs are reaching the end of their life. We have also heard the same about Tape drives, long before that. Although, it would seem that the prediction on HDDs may become a bit more of reality, sooner than expected.

In 2014, in a presentation I’ve done, I’ve said to people that in 2-3 years new and cheaper flash memory would have become the standard solution for general purpose disk storage, thanks to a price per GB comparable with spinning disk. Seems that I was right after all.

Backup is not Archive

In order to protect their data while dealing with explosive data growth, many organizations have started backing up their data to the cloud in an effort to reduce their storage and data center costs as well as obtaining data redundancy without the need to maintain a separate physical DR site. Many also mistakenly believe that these additional backup copies qualify as archive copies. Unfortunately, they do not.

Upgrades are scary!

Having managed and implemented upgrades on highly available systems such as the old Sun StorageTech line of rebranded HDS USP/VSP arrays back in the day, I can tell you that we did not take upgrades lightly!

Unless there was a very compelling reason for an upgrade, the line taken was always “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, but then we were looking after storage in a massively high security environment where even minor changes were taken very seriously indeed.

Manufacturers are coming out with new non-volatile memory (NVM) media like 3D XPoint. Does that mean that DRAM and other NVM media such as NAND flash are now dead?

Do new NVM storage access protocols such as NVM Express (NVMe) mean SCSI/SAS and AHCI/SATA are now dead?

My simple answer is no, they all have bright futures.

Hadoop is a software solution that was developed to solve the challenge of doing a very rapid analysis of vast, often disparate data sets. Also known as big data, the results of these analytics, especially when produced quickly, can significantly improve an organization’s ability to solve problems, create new products and to cure diseases. One of the key tenets of Hadoop is to bring the compute to the storage instead of the storage to the compute. The fundamental belief is that the network in-between compute and storage is too slow, impacting time to results.

OCZ’s NVMe SSDs provide Lower Latency and Faster, more Consistent Performance

When non-volatile flash memory-based solid-state drives (SSDs) were introduced, the protocol support included SAS/SATA. These interfaces were designed for hard disk drives (HDDs) and had more latency than was ideal for flash, but it made for easier integration of SSDs into enterprise storage systems and servers since the existing infrastructure was built around HDDs. SSDs were forced into the mold of HDD storage including the physical interface, host control interface and storage logic. Though PCIe flash drives became a step in the right direction, they lacked the ease of implementation that SAS/SATA SSDs have and do not fully expose the performance that NAND flash can offer.

IDC Predicts Increasing Cost of Enterprise Hard Disk Drives

IDC’s Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Forecast for 2015 to 2019, published in May 2015, predicts that “Slow HDD areal density (capacity per disk) growth means that a steadily increasing number of components per drive will be needed on average to reach higher capacity points, particularly for the enterprise segment. This dynamic will push the overall blended average HDD ASP higher each year over the forecast period….”
