When it comes to compliance, different regulations exist for different industries. For example, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is the granddaddy of healthcare-related compliance. Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) oversees the credit card industry, while Sarbanes–Oxley (SOX) regulates the reliability of financial reporting by public companies and their accounting firms. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) administers a large set of compliance regulations for banks, investment institutions and insurance firms. And there are many more including US–EU Safe Harbor, ISO, FDA and a whole set of federal regulations around information processing, security management and risk management.

Storage 2016 A period of quiet, rest and reflection is what the storage industry needs after a frankly hectic and very eventful 2015.

It won’t get it. The opposing forces of simplicity and complexity, access speed versus capacity, server versus array, on premises versus cloud, and tuned hardware and software versus software-defined are still in deep conflict. And don’t forget the containerisation issues in the background.

There is also a growing generalised attack on storage data access latency, just to add something else into the mix.

The Benefits of a Cloud Integrated Hyper-converged Architecture

Hyper-converged architectures (HCA) consolidate compute, storage and networking onto a single server and then through software, aggregate these servers, creating a shared pool of resources. These resources can then be allocated to virtual machines (VMs) based on their performance and capacity demands. The goal is to simplify the purchasing, implementation and operation of the data center by consolidating or converging it. The logical next step for HCA is to extend its capabilities to the cloud allowing data centers of all sizes to achieve greater flexibility and resilience from disaster.

One such priority is managing the configuration and allocation of storage capacity. In a recent interview on theCUBE, SoftNAS LLC founding CEO Rick Braddy told SiliconANGLE his startup is shooting to make storage allocations as easy as provisioning the underlying hardware resources.

Tintri: We have ZERO interest in adding compute to storage

Under new CEO Ken Klein, hybrid array startup Tintri is sticking to its virtualised server-centric networked storage knitting and embracing the cloud as a third tier cold storage vault.

Currently a VMware-focused storage supplier using VMware storage abstractions, such as virtual machines (VMs) and virtual disks instead of LUNs and RAID groups, Tintri is expanding out its virtualised server remit to support KVM comparatively soon and Hyper-V around the end of the year.
