SMR Drives: Are they too late to the game?

The sudden popularity over NAND Flash has spelled doom for traditional magnetic Hard Disk Drives (HDD). For years we have been hearing how HDDs are reaching the end of their life. We have also heard the same about Tape drives, long before that. Although, it would seem that the prediction on HDDs may become a bit more of reality, sooner than expected.

IDC Predicts Increasing Cost of Enterprise Hard Disk Drives

IDC’s Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Forecast for 2015 to 2019, published in May 2015, predicts that “Slow HDD areal density (capacity per disk) growth means that a steadily increasing number of components per drive will be needed on average to reach higher capacity points, particularly for the enterprise segment. This dynamic will push the overall blended average HDD ASP higher each year over the forecast period….”

HGST announced delivery of the world’s first 10TB hard drive. That’s a 10,000x increase from the first 1GB 3.5″ drives shipping 20 years ago.

Future of Data Storage: 8 Technologies Changing Storage

HGST announces 10TB HDD, ‘Flash Fabric’, NVMe SSDs, Archive Platform

At HGST’s Analyst’s Day in San Francisco this week the company announced several new storage products including a 10 TB drive that uses Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology in conjunction with the company’s Helium (He) technology platform, plus an 8TB He drive. HGST also announced software for creating a ‘flash fabric’, a new NVMe-compliant SSD and they previewed an Active Archive storage platform that’s ideal for creating high-density storage infrastructures with these new high-capacity disk drives.

Seagate: We’ll bring down HAMR in 2014 … this year, you get shingles

Seagate aims to ship enhanced capacity shingled magnetic recording (SMR) disk drives later this year and bring in Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology next year, a full two years earlier than supposed. Possibly this is its riposte to the helium gas attack mounted by WD subsidiary HGST.

Garth Gibson on Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR)

Garth Gibson, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University also known for co-authoring the seminal “Berkeley Raid paper,” was the keynote speaker at the Storage Systems, Hard Disk and Solid State Technologies Summit that was held in Singapore on November 1-2.

The name of this conference is rather lengthy but it was chosen to call attention to the need for both hard disk and solid state technologies to address the future requirements for storage. This conference was sponsored by the Data Storage Institute of Singapore and was targeted at storage developers. Hitachi researchers from our Yokohama research lab presented on virtualization and data ingestion, and Hitachi Data Systems was there to demonstrate a Big Data solution for media editing.
