How often do you upgrade your storage array software?

Good post by Alex Galbraith (thank you)

Upgrades are scary!

Having managed and implemented upgrades on highly available systems such as the old Sun StorageTech line of rebranded HDS USP/VSP arrays back in the day, I can tell you that we did not take upgrades lightly!

Unless there was a very compelling reason for an upgrade, the line taken was always “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, but then we were looking after storage in a massively high security environment where even minor changes were taken very seriously indeed.

Sorry Nimble Storage – I Don’t Believe You!

Good post by Nigel Poulton (thank you)

So a few weeks ago I was at Nimble Storage HQ for a briefing with the Storage Field Day crew. Nice site, nice breakfast, and thanks for contributing towards my travel and hotel costs (that’s the disclaimer out of the way).

The Claim!

Anyway, as part of the presentation, Rod Bagg (VP of Customer Support) made the claim that ~60% of Nimble storage arrays get upgraded during business prime time hours.

New flash features with latest HP 3PAR OS 3.2.1

Good post by Clavin Zito (thank you)

Looking back at the blog for the last week and I’ve had other subject matter experts writing blogs so I thought today’s news would be a perfect chance for me to jump back into the mix!

We released HP 3PAR OS 3.2.1 a few weeks ago but haven’t publicly announced what that OS release brings to HP 3PAR StoreServ. Since the enhancements are substantial, I’ll talk today at a high-level and over the next few days I’ll have some of those other subject matter experts posting articles to go deeper on some of the news.

EMC XtremIO Destructive Upgrade Demonstrates Architecture Matters

Good post by Chris M Evans (thank you)

News has emerged about a potential upgrade issue with the latest version of O/S code for the EMC XtremIO all-flash platform.  As discussed in this blog post, the upgrade to XIOS 3.0 is not simply disruptive but is destructive.  According to Chris Mellor’s post, the reason for the destructive nature of the upgrade is to change the on-disk de-duplication block size from 4K to 8K in order to ensure metadata can be managed efficiently.

Cisco should hit harder, or give up… (about storage)

Good post from Enrico Signoretti (thank you)

Yesterday I read this article by Chris Mellor on the register. I always find Chris’s comments reveal good insight need, and he raised an interesting point about the future of the all-CISCO integrated stack (UCS+NEXUS+Whiptail Invicta) but I too would like to put in my two cents.

From my point of view, CISCO has two options here and neither of them are ideal.

H21708 Controllers lock down during Flashcopy volume creation – IBM Servers

220px-High_voltage_warning.svg

Source

RETAIN tip: H21708

Symptom

On controller firmware levels 7.77, 7.83, 7.84, and 7.86, the IBM System Storage DS Storage Controller may experience an issue during a Flashcopy volume creation on a Protection Information (PI) enabled array whereby both controllers will lock down with both controllers’ seven (7)-segment LCDs displaying ‘0E’ and ‘L4’.

When this occurs, any hosts connected to the storage controller will have a loss of access.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • IBM System Storage DCS3700 Storage Subsystem, type 1818, any model
  • IBM System Storage DS3512, type 1746, any model
  • IBM System Storage DS3524, type 1746, any model
  • IBM System Storage DS3950 Express, type 1814, any model
  • IBM System Storage DS5020 Disk Controller (1814-20A), any model
  • IBM System Storage DS5100 Storage Controller, type 1818, any model
  • IBM System Storage DS5300 Storage Controller, type 1818, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

The following system firmware level(s) are affected: 7.77, 7.83, 7.84, and 7.86

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

The fix for this issue is resolved in 7.84.50.00 and later levels and 7.86.36.00 and later levels of the controller firmware.

The files will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and operating system on IBM Support’s Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/

Until the files are available on Fix Central, they can be obtained by calling IBM Technical Support.

Workaround

Do not create Flashcopy volumes on PI enabled arrays until the above mentioned fix has been installed.

Additional information

To hit the PI error, read requests must be issued that are the size of a Flashcopy repository cluster or larger. The read request must contain regions that are on the base volume and the repository volume. When the controller breaks up the read requests to the respective regions the code neglected to set a variable correctly, thus causing PI errors when the reads are sent to the drives.
