How often do you upgrade your storage array software?

Good post by Alex Galbraith (thank you)

Upgrades are scary!

Having managed and implemented upgrades on highly available systems such as the old Sun StorageTech line of rebranded HDS USP/VSP arrays back in the day, I can tell you that we did not take upgrades lightly!

Unless there was a very compelling reason for an upgrade, the line taken was always “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, but then we were looking after storage in a massively high security environment where even minor changes were taken very seriously indeed.

Why We Don’t Have a Nutanix NX-8150 Review

Good post by Brian Beeler (thank you)

StorageReview has been the largest outlet independently reviewing enterprise IT for many years. For the first time we have to tell the story of how a review in progress came to an end without being published. There have been several instances where we were asked to not post a review by a vendor before, but the reviews always went live. This story is significantly different however, as we encountered a new set of behaviors by Nutanix. The summary is this; Nutanix sent an NX-8150 cluster for review, our testing revealed performance issues, Nutanix made several software updates over six months to improve performance, in June they asked to update our cluster with newer Haswell-based systems, we agreed, Nutanix then backtracked and refused to send the promised replacements.

SSD Endurance. What does it mean to you?

Good post by Andrey Kudryavtsev (thank you)

I continuously think about the endurance aspect of our products, how SSD users understand it and use it for its positive benefits. Sadly, endurance is often underestimated and sometimes overestimated. I see customers buying High Endurance products for the benefit of protection, without understanding the real requirements of the application. Now that piece of night thoughts goes to my blog.

EMC XtremIO Destructive Upgrade Demonstrates Architecture Matters

Good post by Chris M Evans (thank you)

News has emerged about a potential upgrade issue with the latest version of O/S code for the EMC XtremIO all-flash platform.  As discussed in this blog post, the upgrade to XIOS 3.0 is not simply disruptive but is destructive.  According to Chris Mellor’s post, the reason for the destructive nature of the upgrade is to change the on-disk de-duplication block size from 4K to 8K in order to ensure metadata can be managed efficiently.

Your DS3500 needs new firmware to support T10-PI

Very good post from Anthony Vandewerdt (thank you !)

For those of you who use the IBM DS3500 (a midrange storage controller), you should ensure all your machines are on firmware release 07.86.32.00 or higher since this adds support for T10-PI.  This is because new additional or replacement disk drives may require that support. Inserting high-level drives into down-level machines can result in a failed drive replacement or unexpected errors.   Ideally you should not be upgrading your machines while there is a failed component, so I recommend you pro-actively upgrade your DS3500s, particularly if you are ordering new drives or additional enclosures.

IBM DS3500/DCS3700/DCS3860 Controller firmware version 7.86.39.00 code package

ibm-maintenance

With controller firmware 7.86.32.00 and later, the DSM is supported on Windows 64bit ONLY. Please do not upgrade any storage subsystem to controller firmware to 7.86.32.00 or later if that storage subsystem has 32bit Windows hosts attached. The 7.8x.xx.xx release contains significant new function in addition to firmware fixes. It will also change the look and feel of the Storage Manager GUI being used to manage the subsystems running 7.8x.xx.xx controller firmware. Please review the Readme and product documentation before installing this firmware since once it is installed it will not be possible to return to a prior firmware level (7.7x or earlier).
