IDC’s Worldwide Total Disk Storage Systems Market for Q3 2015 had some interesting results. The thumbnail is the title of this post.
But there are a couple more details. ODM vendors – who sell direct to the hyperscale data center customers – had the fastest revenue growth of any supplier at 23.4%. HP’s revenue growth came in second at 16%, while the Others followed closely at 15.2%.

VMware Metro Storage Cluster
VMware Metro Storage Cluster (vMSC) allows vCenter to stretch across two data centers in geographically dispersed locations. In normal circumstances, in vSphere 5.5 and below at least, vCenter would be deployed in Link-Mode so two vCenters can be managed as one. However, with vMSC it’s possible to have one vCenter manage all resources across two sites and leverage the underlying stretch storage and networking infrastructures. I’ve done previous blogs on NetApp MetroCluster to describe how a stretched storage cluster is spread across two disparate data centers. I’d also recommend reading a previous post done on vMSC by Paul Meehan over on www.virtualizationsoftware.com. The idea behind this post is to provide the VMware view for the MetroCluster posts and to give a better idea on how MetroCluster storage links into virtualization environments.

How many times have you heard this statement? Tape is dead! Mainframe is dead! So on and so forth… it turned out not to be true, most of the times it was just a way to say that a newer technology was seeing a strong adoption, so strong as to eclipse the older one in the eyes of the masses. But, in the case of FCoE, it is slightly different.

There have been a number of queries around Virtual Volumes (VVols) and replication, especially since the release of KB article 2112039 which details all the interoperability aspects of VVols.
In Q1 of the KB, the question is asked “Which VMware Products are interoperable with Virtual Volumes (VVols)?” The response includes “VMware vSphere Replication 6.0.x”.

It has been quite an interesting 2 decades.
In the beginning (starting in the early to mid-90s), SAN (Storage Area Network) was the dominant architecture. DAS (Direct Attached Storage) was on the wane as the channel-like throughput of Fibre Channel protocol coupled by the million-device addressing of FC obliterated parallel SCSI, which was only able to handle 16 devices and throughput up to 80 (later on 160 and 320) MB/sec.

X-IO’s five-year warranty, maintenance-free sealed disk and disk+flash arrays have a new brother: the all-flash ISE. It’s sprinted right to the top of the SPC-1 price/performance benchmark charts.
The ISE 800 comes in a standard 3U X-IO enclosure and uses X-IO’s Gen 3 architecture, which first appeared in the ISE 780 in January. There are three models:
All provide a max of 400,000 IOPS, or 260,000 IOPS with what is called an OLTP workload. There is up to 5GB/sec of bandwidth available.

Market value reached $11.3bn in 2014
The flash market is no longer being driven purely by aggressive startups, according to IDC, which has pointed to a flurry of storage giants that have cottoned on and helped propel the market to new heights.
In 2014, the global flash-based array market grew to $11.3bn (£7.43bn) – $10bn from the hybrid-flash array (HFA) market and the rest coming from all-flash arrays (AFAs).

I suspect I wasn’t the only one last week who was scratching his head at the latest idea from NetApp which sees them offering a VMware EVO: RAIL solution that incorporates Data ONTAP filer technology. In case that last statement is unclear to you, yes, NetApp are suggesting that EVO: RAIL, the solution that uses VSAN and commodity disk to specifically remove the need for a dedicated shared storage array, actually should be packaged with one.
